The Vail Effect

As you will notice I mention the "Vail Effect" in many of my posts. I figured I should explain what I mean by it. The "Vail Effect" originally started as a term I would use when Vail Resorts would purchase a ski resort and add it to their season's pass epic pass. Once Vail Resorts takes over a resort the patrons of the resort quickly notice that everything becomes more expensive and in a way seems like Vail Resorts is trying to push them out so they can make room for their ideal customer base. Vail Resort employees, the backbones of these resorts, typically do not get paid much and have poor work environments that do not foster the relationships you hope to see in the workplace. Once Vail Resorts would come in and take over they would then make rules and change the mountain in a way that seems to me that makes it less fun. Today the term the "Vail Effect" does not just fit Vail resorts but also companies like the Alterra Mountain Company, the owners of the Ikon Pass. Alterra though it's newer than Vail Resorts operates in similar ways and also seems to ruin the resorts we love.

Bring back the days of the privately owned ski resort, where it's affordable and people are there to have fun and can have fun without getting in trouble.

I never thought of it this way but everything does get more expensive when Vail gains ownership.
